Duggan's Dew

Blended Scotch
Purchase Price: $16
Place of Purchase: Warehouse - New York, NY
Rating: 8.2

Duggan's Dew has a rep as a "cheap" brand in certain circles, but in reality, like so many other little-known blends, it's merely inexpensive. I actually have a bottle of this at the moment and it's been growing on me more and more. It reminds me a bit of Grant's Family Reserve, very robust and chewy with a lingering butterscotch element to it that reminds me of trips taken to various Ohio Dairy Queens around 1974when the Wings song "Band on the Run" ruled the airwaves and Butterscotch sundaes served up in a plastic batting helmet were often the treat of choice. Nice.

Its like a one shot of johnnie walker mixed with horse urine and some natural light.

Not true...It is not the best quality Scotch I've had, but it is the best I've had for the price
($15). Kinda a butterscotch and slight smoky peat taste. Not a 12 yo single malt, but definitely not "horse urine."

I think it is very nice, a light butter scotch smell, mellow honey tasting very pleasant. you must have gotten a bad bottle

Horse urine? I think not... This has a toffee, butter scotch, nose, very light and sweet. Its taste will take you through, sweet, sharp, and spicy, finishing off with a crisp, mellow, peat.

Wonderful whiskey, and very affordable.

I agree with the slight peaty task with a mellow overall tone; for the money, as good as it gets... now where's my single malt¡

I had a bit of Duggan's Dew with the old guy who used to own the distillary...his name was Charlie, lived on the shore in Red Bank NJ. I enjoyed it especially his stories of bootlegging in the prohibition days.

You can't beat it for the money! I keep a 2 liter bottle at various friends (who don't like scotch). When they have a visitor who does, they generally shun it, so it is always there whenever I visit.

THIS MOTHAFUKA SCOTH IS THE SHIT! IT IS APPROPRIATED TO THE OCCASION IF YOU RUN OUT OF MONEY AND YOU DON'T WANT A HEADACHE.

Johnnie Walker is overated, overpriced and not even that good. Duggans Dew is classic and still 86.8 proof with all the great flavors I like in a good blend.
Great for the money too!

Ive drank it for years and I love it. Under priced for this quality and has alot of nice malt taste with a wisp of heathery peat.
i'll keep buying it thanyou very much!

dear anonymous,

while sir duggans may taste like horse urine at first, there is a quick work around for this. here's what you dew:

open and allow to age for 6 six years
mix with half a lime (sticker on) and old lemon juice
add to price chopper sweet tea powder

this will greatly cut the by-product flavor you speak of. please note: a headache and bloody sheets can still be guaranteed.

Dear Anonymous to Anonymous,

I agree and thank you for teaching me how to duggins. The bloody surprise left me not duggins to dew. I've never duggin that before. If I had to choose between Duggins with a headache and death. I'd probably choose death before duggins. On a side note, a mouse duggins my house. It duggins right through the wall! Can you duggin believe that?

One additional question, for everyone I suppose, I tried using Duggins on the bloody sheets this morning and it duggins work. What dew you suggest I try? I tried Clorox, bleach, paint thinner, actual horse urine, and Duggin, which are all of similar strength.

I think I'll go to McDonalds and try some of their McDuggins.

In God we Duggins,

Like I dew with so many things in life, I thought maybe I jumped to unfair conclusions in my last post (anonymous in response to anonymous). With literally nothing else to give me a buzz in the house besides mini frozen crabcakes, I decided to dew what any respectable consumer would dew: the duggans. The post below describes my experience - unfortunately it should be read from left to right: hopeful to horse urine.

http://todayifelthuge.blogspot.com/2012/05/never-duggan-that-again.html

Does that face look like it's enjoying "heathery peat" to dew?

I've had the pleasure od drinking some nicely aged scotches and have no complaint about the taste of this scotch. It is not 12 y/o single malts, but it as a daily affordable drink. I enjoy my scotch straight without ice, soda, or water. I sense more of a cherry aftertaste the butterscotch, but regardless a nice drink for a reasonable price.

Per the previous, rather than a butterscotch, there is a hint of sweetness akin to cherry or maybe even grapes. I have reason to believe that wine barrels were used in aging of this mellow and very agreeable tasting scotch whiskey....not to mention, there is not another with the quality at it's price!

In a blind tast test with expensive blended scotch's, this would likely rate in the middle of the pack. This is a tremendous bargain. I really like the real expensive bottles of single malts but this one is great for blended whiskey drinks or even with a just a splash of water. I drink this and buy an expensive bottle of single malt every Christmas and again for my birthday in the spring.

Not too assuming and lite to the palate..Only for those who appreciate a good blend with family and acquaintances. I know a good scotch at a reasonable price..lb

What's this wussy shit about "notes of cherry" and road tar as you savor THE VERY O'Kirkintilloch SCOTCH that graced (greased?) over 50 stories in the "Mr. Glencannon" short stories that ran in the Saturday Evening Post from 1930 to 1950, by Guy Gilpatric?!
Your grandfathers would'a slapped the horse piss out of themselves had they known the issue of their loins had gone in for such sissy talk.
Duggan's Dew is honest whisky that's just not fashionable anymore, like venerable Bourbons such as Old Fitzgerald, Old Forester & others, and so many manly Ryes that are forgotten but not forsaken in memory.
Fie on any man who speak ill of Duggan's Dew. Better speak ill of your slutty sister.

Colin Glencannon is my hero. I plan to buy a bottle and join him for a Dew or two. On second thought, let's make it a case.

When my kid's mom left me this scotch was my go to liver annihilator

People leaving bad reviews probably accidentally bought Dewar's (more common blended scotch, whatever you dew, dew NOT BUY DEWARS, It is a nasty knockoff of duggan's)

the real duggans will leave your emotional holes sloshing with a surprisingly serene sorrow - oh shit my watch broke

Dewars is Horse Piss
Duggan's is the most painless way to commit suicide (even the hangover is enjoyable with this nice peaty scotch) they scrape the moss off the tree of life and put it into this fine mash

I got this scotch for 14 bucks at my local grocery store. And it is damn good scotch. I plan on picking up 2 bottles next time, throwing 900 mils in my whiskey decanter, letting it breathe a bit for a few days, and forgetting it's cheap scotch. Duggans Few is damn fine scotch.

I went to a liquor store I usually don't go to and saw Duggans. I have never heard of it before. I usually get dewars. I wasn't expecting much but I am pleasantly suprised. For the price you can't beat it! I will def. Be purchasing more!

2/13/17 Okay, I am retired and have to watch my money. I LIKE A MaCallen 12 or an everyday Famous Grouse. But retired in NC it is too much money with the state price fixing. I found that Duggan's Dew filled the gap of a nice taste and price and have turned my wife into a Scotch drinker also. Just wondering if this blend is a blend of single malts or just a single malt with spirits added added in..... Anyway, a great buy...

It's a little trouubling when someone knows what horse urine tastes like. Don't you agree?

It's funny! I drank scotch from my teens two the twenties, and then didn't drink much hard liquer until 40 years later. I'm not much of a connoisseur, but I have bought Johnny Gold Lable, and my nephew bought me an expensive Johnny Walker Double something or other which was expensive, but didn't live up to the hype! I bought a handle of this and really liked it (straight at that), so I bought it again! So, then I read a bad review, and questioned myself, and my taste for a decent scotch! After reading these reviews, I see most of you have it pegged just right - a good scotch, especially for the price. I don't taste all of the cherry and butterscotch flavors that some of you mention, but like I said, "I am not an expert"! And I've never tasted horse urine like one reviewer, most likely has, but this scotch makes me happy! Thank you for your reviews, It's amazing how we can be swayed from something that we enjoy by one bad review!

Today is my first time drinking it after recommended by the store owner. I fount it is a surprisingly smooth and neutral taste as a 86.8 proof scotch and liked it instantly. I paid much less than $15 as someone posted for a 750 ml bottle that is a shocker to me. What a deal!

Who are these experts who have a lot of experience with horse urine?
